Tomomi Johnston

Tomomi started playing clarinet and saxophone at age 10 in Japan. As a school student, she spent an intense time competing and rehearsing in a concert band. She graduated from the Faculty of Education at Oita University in Japan and learnt teaching methods of music as well as her speciality in Japanese education. After coming to New Zealand, she has gained a music performance diploma from the Licentiate Trinity College London and has studied classical saxophone under Michael Jamieson at the University of Auckland. Her chamber music group TriOnique (2017) and Hari Trio (2018) was selected to perform in the final of the Auckland Chamber Music Society Prize.

Tomomi is building her professional carrier through performing in the Manukau Symphony Orchestra and Auckland Chamber Orchestra. She also coaches students and performs in concert for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. Tomomi has worked at the CANZ Nelson Composers Workshop as a performer. TrioNique is planning several tours, performing and running educational workshops. Music education is Tomomi’s passion as she wishes to keep teaching and creating opportunities for young musicians in the future.
