Born in Australia, Polly Sussex moved to New Zealand at an early age. She studied violoncello and piano in Prague and at the Royal Academy of Music in London, before receiving her Bachelor of Music (Honours) and a PhD (The Violoncello Sonatas of Luigi Boccherini) from the University of Otago. She also holds Diplomas in Teaching and Arts Administration from the University of Auckland.
More recently, she became interested in the Viola da Gamba. In 2007 and 2008, Polly undertook postgraduate studies in viola da gamba at the Hochschule fur Kuenste in Bremen, Germany and the Scola Cantorum in Basel, Switzerland. She plays all sizes of viola da gamba including the Pardessus.
Polly performs, teaches piano, and violoncello. She also researches baroque cello and viola da gamba music of the 17th and 18th centuries. Recently, her article Boccherini: the “Tenor and “Alto’ Violoncelli and the Stift Seitenstetten, was published in Boccherini Studies Volume 5. Polly performs with the Baroque chamber group, Affetto, which recently released its first CD.
